PRO TIP: Manage your feathering. The amount of feathering is determined by the length of the initial guide. “A shorter guide produces lots of feathered layers while a longer guide creates a sleeker and bouncier feathered look.”

Ulta Beauty education meets you where you are and invests resources to foster belonging as well as a competitive edge.
Like many hair fashion trends, the Butterfly starts with the cut, says Design Team Specialist Gilad Goldstein. The Butterfly emphasizes feathered, face-framing layers and:

The Cut
Over-Direction: Creating weight in the opposite direction of the natural fall of the hair.
Elevation: Redistributing weight within a section to create layers.
The Cutting Line: The artistic signature that can completely change the look.

“Introducing dimension to the hair through color provides fullness, movement and shine.”
PRO TIP: Pre-book your guest! Dimensional techniques provide softer outgrowth, but many services can help maintain the look between refreshes. Beto recommends glosses, root touch-ups, treatments and haircuts.
Lived-In Color: Soft dimension toward the root, with lower maintenance. Create by using different lightening techniques or depositing depth at the root.
Color Blocking: Modern, edgy, with high contrast between shades or levels. Customized color placement.
Quiet Luxury: Softer dimension in a matte color palette. Styling enhances the color for a fuller, face-framing look.

Ulta Beauty Design Team Specialist
PRO TIP: “The goal is volume,” Justin says. "Even a moderate amount of oil or serum—essential for other looks and trends—can deflate the Butterfly style,” he says. Recommend guests try dry shampoo and texture spray to extend the blowout.
Customizing the styling technique is just as important as customizing the cut and color, says Ulta Beauty Design Team Specialist Justin Toves-Vincilione. The styling segment in Butterfly and Beyond teaches stylists how to deliver the best blowouts, and how to vary brush sizes (small, medium and large) to suit hair length and texture. Choosing the right products is also key.

“Dry shampoo can give a short-lived boost to volume. Texture spray is a finishing product with more tack. It’s built to enhance shape, movement, body and to last.”

A team of 100+ Services District Educators (SDEs) deliver a curriculum of in-salon, hands-on education in live, digital and hybrid formats. SDEs also spend a day per week in their home salon taking care of guests, ensuring they stay authentically connected and grounded in salon trends.
SDEs deliver Core classes in cutting, styling, hair color, texture, extensions and more. All classes are directly linked to the services Ulta Beauty provides, to drive success and income for the stylist.
“Our education is always evolving to be exactly what a stylist needs,” says Samantha Manuzak, Sr. Manager, Services Program Development. Another point of pride and difference is Ulta Beauty’s investment in personal development and soft skills.
Many moments will impact your guests’ experience, says Dani. Ulta Academy’s 6 Points of Service program helps you focus on how they feel, their sense of belonging and what brings them back to your chair.
The 6 Points of Service process — Welcome, Consultation, Backbar, Service, Guest Satisfaction and Send Off — becomes a checklist beauty professionals can use to host an appointment from beginning to end. A series of edgy, easy to watch videos in short, fun modules helps stylists practice the points and use the information to build opportunities into every service.
“Beauty is belonging,” says Dani Darmanin, Ulta Beauty Director of Services Education & Development. “And education is how Ulta Beauty brings career support to life. It’s how we connect our stylists to our vision and culture of belonging.”

Artistry and Creativity Thrive Here
From the main stage to your chair and everywhere in between, Ulta Beauty prioritizes your craft and artistic excellence.
In addition to Ulta Academy Core and Texture classes led by SDEs, Ulta Beauty offers cutting-edge Trendspiration education and collections from its own Design Team of stylists. The 20 stylists who audition and earn a spot on the Design Team represent the Ulta Beauty community and share insights and tips from photo shoots, at industry events, online through social media — all while maintaining a full book behind the chair.
Last season’s Trendspiration content taught Ulta Beauty stylists how to customize and create looks that went “Beyond the Butterfly” and introduced “Express Glow” color to serve and take care of every guest. This year, the Trendspiration emphasis is “Glow and Flow” techniques and the trend of Golden Hour Hair, all customized to the guest, varying color formulas, foil placement and cuts ranging from Soft Layers to Sunset Layers to the shorter and more involved Flow Cut.
The Pro Team is another Ulta Beauty creative hallmark. Pro Team members are leading artists known throughout the industry. These icons represent key Ulta Beauty brand partners (Sean Godard for Redken, Sonya Dove for Wella, Gilad Goldstein for Redken, Danielle Keasling for Biolage, David Lopez for Kenra, Justin Toves-Vincilione for Moroccanoil, Vernon François for Olaplex) as well as their own special expertise (Michelle O’Connor for styling and texture; Jaleesa Jaikaran, Deney Adam and Mat Wulff for makeup). They work together under the Ulta Beauty banner to inspire, inform and ignite artistic passion among stylists.
In addition to creating collections and campaigns for Ulta Beauty, they educate on platforms at industry events and regularly earn honors on behalf of Ulta Beauty. Recently, Ulta Beauty stylists cheered as Pro Team member Vernon François accepted the 2025 NAHA Award for Texture during the Premiere show in Orlando.
Design Team stylists and Pro Team artists work under the Ulta Beauty banner to inspire, ignite and fuel creative passion and salon success.
